Yoshida Fire Festival (Fire Extinguishing Festival) is an autumn festival of both Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Suwa Shrine, which is held on August 26 and 27 every year as a festival at the close of the climbing season of Mt.Fuji. With a history of over 400 years, Yoshida Fire Festival is one of the three unique festivals and one of the ten largest fire festivals in Japan, and is a representative festival of Fujiyoshida city. On the afternoon of August 26, the event starts with a Shinto ritual held at the shrine, and two portable shrines, the "the “Omyojin-san” (Myojin-Mikoshi) and the “Mikage” (Mt. Fuji), travel around the parishioners in the Kamiyoshida area. At dusk, the portable shrines are dedicated at a place called “Otabisho” and at the same time, more than 70 large torches that are tied up into a 3-meter-high bamboo shoot shape are lit. The fantastic sight of the torchlight illuminating a 2km stretch of road is breathtaking. It continues to shine brightly until late into the night, and the excitement of the festival reaches a peak. In the afternoon of the next day, the 27th, the two portable shrines will pass through the shrine parishioners while shouting a cheer, and return to Sengen Shrine at dusk. The festival reaches its climax with the spectators joining in when the parishioners and worshippers carry "Susuki-no-tamagushi" and follow the two portable shrines parading through the shrine grounds. ※Image is for reference only
